Tobacco Prevention Goals

Goal 1

  Live, Work, Play Smoke-free Wyoming

a)      We will identify workplaces and public venues that are ready to voluntarily adopt smoke-free policies and provide assistance in implementing those policies.

b)       We will educate the public about the benefits of smoke-free homes and autos and the danger of exposure to secondhand smoke.

c)      Through extensive one-on-one contacts, we will measure the amount of public support for implementation of tobacco-free policies in our communities.

d)      We will educate community leaders about the dangers of second hand smoke and the benefits of public tobacco-free environments.

e)      We will work with boards-of-directors to implement tobacco-free policies at all events sponsored by them, including prohibition of tobacco sponsorship.

f)        We will conduct surveys and interviews to measure the effectiveness of community action in reducing the prevalence of tobacco use in our community.

Goal 2

Support our youth to help them avoid becoming tobacco users.

a)      We will educate the community on the factors that influence whether youth will become tobacco users.

b)      We will work with local businesses to eliminate tobacco product advertising.

c)      We will partner with the schools to provide information to parents on the best ways to help their children remain tobacco and alcohol free.

d)      We will continue to work with local law enforcement officials (police, prosecuting attorneys, and courts) to use existing laws most effectively to discourage youth tobacco and alcohol use.

e)      We will work with the local school board and with school officials to implement effective ways to enforce existing tobacco-free policies.

f)        We will encourage teachers, coaches, and other adult role models to our youth to stress the importance of remaining tobacco and alcohol free.

Goal 3

Provide help to tobacco users who wish to quit.

a)      We will cooperate with schools, public agencies and private businesses to help them make quitting information available to their employees.

b)      We will conduct a needs assessment study to determine what kinds of cessation services are needed and will work to find ways to make those services available.

c)      We will promote the existing free cessation services that are available from the State of Wyoming.
