We are currently forming the committees that will organize and carry out the activities to help us reach our goals.
As we begin our project, we are looking for four to six people in each town to serve on our leadership committees. This committee will do the strategic planning for our programs and will be the main decision-making body for each town. Membership on these committees will require significant commitments of time, energy, and creative thinking. (As of November 2006, three people have agreed to serve on the Sundance coalition. This group has created the first strategic plan for Sundance.)
As the plans are being made for each town's activities, we will need larger groups of people willing to donate the time needed to make the plans a reality. At this level of commitment, we hope to sign up about 50 people.
For any progress to take place, we also will need a much larger group of people willing to write letters to the editor, talk to elected officials to educate them on the issues, and spread the word in every imaginable informal way. This group of people needs to have about 500 members for true community action to take place.
It seems that we are always too busy and that we have too many people asking us for our time. We urge you to think about the dangers of tobacco use, how many people are harmed by tobacco, and the fact that many communities have been very successful in reducing tobacco usage. If you can make the commitment, you can be sure to see results. Call Ernie at 283-1682. Thanks!
